How to Prep Your Song Before Sending It to the Studio

⚠️ Do This before You Do Anything!

Before before you send your song to a demo producer or anyone, it's highly advisable to copyright it first. The only legally recognized source to copyright your music is the U.S. Copyright Office ↗🌐 (*see below if you're not a U.S. citizen).

What if your song isn't complete? For example, if you only write lyrics or only write melodies. You will need both before you can obtain a copyright. Not to worry, if that's the case, you can copyright your song once it's completed.

*NOTE: The copyrightable portions of a song are its lyrics and melody. The chords played over a melody are not copyrightable, being that chords are an extension and product of and are suggested by the melody.

However, if you are going to hire our writers or other writers to write either your lyrics or melody as a work-for-hire, then you will be able to copyright the song after it is completed.

A work-for-hire arrangement means that the person writing the melody or lyrics assigns the rights to their work to the person or entity that hired them, who will then be the owner of those rights.

Optionally, you can work with a co-writer to help you complete your song, and you will both share co-ownership.

📌 TIP: Be sure to check out our article on how to save money by obtaining copyright on several songs at once as a collection.

For songwriters outside the US:

If you're in a country that's part of the Berne Convention (which includes over 180 nations), your copyright is automatically recognized in the U.S. upon creation. However, registering your copyright with your local government—or with the U.S. Copyright Office—is still a smart move. It helps prove ownership, makes licensing easier, and offers stronger legal protection if someone misuses your work.

How to Prepare a Song for Recording

Follow these steps to prep your song for demo recording, aimed at facilitating a smooth, efficient, and professional demo session.

1. Finalize Your Lyrics (And Check for Typos!)

Before anything else, make sure your lyrics are:

📌 Tip: Include any specific phrasing, emphasis, or pronunciation a singer should know in parentheses or a note at the top.

*See our Lyric Sheet Preparation Guide.

2. Record a Simple Work Track

Even if you're not a pro vocalist or instrumentalist, preparing a demo track at home isn't necessary. A simple, rough work track goes a long way. It gives the studio a blueprint for tempo, phrasing, melody, and vibe.

Your work track can be:

📌 Tip: Your work track doesn't need to be polished—just clear enough to communicate the structure and feel.

*See our Guides for Recording a Work Track on Your Phone and Recording a Work Track When You Don't Play an Instrument.

3. Provide a Chord Chart and song map (If You Have One)

If you know the basic chords to your song, feel free to include them (not required). If you have a song map that describes your arrangement, you can send that too (not required)

If your song is incomplete, you may want to include a song map if you have a specific arrangement in mind for its finished form. For example:

A song map can be handy if you intend to use a non-conventional arrangement (*Although not recommended for commercial songs).

Otherwise, we'll figure out the chords and chart out the arrangement ourselves. If your song is incomplete, the producer will typically give your song a "commercial" song arrangement that best fits your song's style within the context of its genre.

4. Share Creative Direction (or Let Us Guide You)

While the style or genre of your song is often clear, it's helpful to include a brief note describing your creative intent, especially if you're only sending a melody or a minimal track.

Be clear about what you're envisioning:

If you're not sure—that's okay! Just let us know, and we'll help shape the arrangement based on our years of experience turning songs into industry-ready demos.

5. Send All Materials in One Organized Message

To keep things moving smoothly, try to send everything at once:

That helps your studio team stay focused on what matters: making your song shine. This will enable them to review your materials and provide the most accurate estimate of the cost to produce your demo.

🎵 A Little Prep Goes a Long Way
