Stop Comparing: Focus on Your Uniqueness as a Songwriter or Artist

Force Your Inner Critic to Leave the Room

It happens to every creative person at some point.

You hear someone else's song, see their chart numbers, read about their latest publishing deal—and suddenly, instead of feeling inspired, you feel small.

You start thinking, Why am I not there yet? Why don't my songs sound like that? Or worse—Maybe I'm not good enough.

Let's be clear: The comparison trap in music is a creativity killer. It clouds your vision, weakens your voice, and steals the joy out of songwriting.

But here's the truth: You were never meant to sound like them. You were meant to sound like you. We are all on our own journey. Your journey is this: Find your unique songwriting voice.

1. The Industry Doesn't Need Another Copy—It Needs Your Voice

The most memorable artists and writers broke through because they leaned into what made them different, not what made them similar. If you try to mold yourself to sound like whoever's “hot” right now, you'll always be chasing a moving target—and you'll lose your identity along the way.

What you do uniquely is what makes you valuable. Focus on that.

2. You Don't See the Work Behind Someone Else's Success

Every "overnight success" is backed by years of invisible hustle:

When you compare your rough draft to someone else's professional work, you're only seeing part of the picture—and judging yourself unfairly in the process.

3. Creativity Thrives in Focus, Not Distraction

When your mind is caught up in what everyone else is doing, there's less space for your own ideas. But when you turn the noise down and lean into your own creative instincts, you'll write songs that feel more honest, more original, and more satisfying.

📌 TIP: Turn off social media. Close the comparison loop. Write something weird, raw, or unexpected. That's where the magic is.

4. Let Other People's Success Inspire You—Not Define You

It's okay to admire other songwriters. But use their wins as motivation, not measurement. Say to yourself:

"If they can do it, I can too. In my own way. In my own time."

Cheer for others without tearing yourself down. Their path isn't your path—and that's a good thing.

🎵 Do What You Do, and Make It Sing

Your job as a songwriter or artist isn't to outdo anyone else. Your job is to dig deeper into what only you can do, and do it with all your heart. To find your unique songwriting voice. Your story, your sound, your process—they're enough. They matter. Stay true as a songwriter to your style and your distinctive artistic vision.

One day you'll inspire others

I know it might be hard to imagine, especially if you're in the early stages of your songwriting journey, but if you keep going, there will come a time when others see you as an inspiration.

There were two particularly rewarding moments for me as a songwriter that caught me off guard. The first was watching my songs performed for an audience at Budokan in Japan, and seeing them sing back my English words to the band. It was surreal. Is that really my song? Not only had my song traveled halfway around the world, but it had also broken through a language barrier.

The second was reading comments online that people made about my songs and the impact they had on their lives. The meaning they took from the lyrics, or how the song connected to a moment in time for them.

Instances like these demonstrate the power of music. I also suddenly realized that it's not about money. And it's certainly not about fame, because most people don't know who the songwriters are. They typically believe it is the artist. When a song connects in the way I've just described, it's something money can't buy—it's truly priceless! That's why we songwriters do what we do. It's the art itself and the feeling it gives others that matter.
